  • A Thought for Today

    24 September, 2014

Years ago in what now seems like another lifetime I used to sell books. I can’t recall any that particularly impressed me but one book had a title that I’ve never forgotten, “Many Paths, One Heaven”. That book was yet another example of a folksy theology that still sounds so embracing and inclusive of all and sundry.

In short, the idea is many paths in life that people take all lead to the same place, Heaven (whatever that word means to them). But think about this for a moment.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)

I take it from those two verses that Jesus Christ would not be in agreement with that book title.

There are not many paths – just two.  One is wide, broad and it is the popular choice for most people (The New Living Translation calls it “the highway to hell”) whereas the other is narrow and demanding.

There is not one destination – but two. One is destruction and the other is life
