Hi Sweetheart,
If heaven is the eternal present and there is no sense of time, I guess that anniversaries are conspicuous by their absence? That may be true where you are but next Saturday here is our 51st wedding anniversary. This will be the first anniversary in all those years that we have not been together for this special occasion.
We always made the effort to go out for dinner and I’m so glad we did. Even in the early years when money was in short supply we would go to a restaurant, check the menu against our budget and order accordingly. This was one way we could affirm the high priority that we placed upon our marriage.
If the weather permits Karen and Jamie will take me up to Bathurst so I can spend some reflective time sitting by your memorial. I mention the weather because last weekend there were record snowfalls in the Blue Mountains all the way up to Queensland. Anyway, I think I mentioned our intension to come in my last letter.
Just 2 years ago this month, Pastor Tony organized that “Fire Side Chat” (as he called it) in the Sunday morning service. I took time today to listen again to the recording of that special service. Listening to your voice enriched my sense of gratitude and sharpened my memories of that day as well as the memories of many events to which you referred during the interview.
I was impressed again by the maturity of your comments, insights and answers to Tony’s questions. The quiet strength and assurance of your relationship with God was strong and true. And now, 2 years later, those who listen to that interview continue to be blessed and inspired by your testimony.
Unlike the only other time that I have tried to listen to the recording all the way through, this time I made it. But not without an occasional stop to do something about my tears!!
Your voice settled so gently on my ears and in my heart. Oh, I miss you so much.
Prayer is still an area of struggle for me. I’ve already told you about this in an earlier letter. But I am beginning to set aside specific time each day to read portions of Scripture. I’ve begun in the Psalms because much of their content is personal prayer. And the writers were not hesitant to ask questions in their prayers and express their confusion with events and experiences they did not understand. If I stick with this commitment I may learn again the place of prayer in the life of the Christian I am starting with Psalm 139. My plan is not only to read the Psalm but to re-write it in my own words as a way to remember and apply its truth.
My appointed time for prayer is just about here so I will close now and write again soon.
