Our Journey Through The Valley (36)
13 August, 2013
MIKE: The wheel chair man came again late last week. I mentioned recently that his first visit a week ago confronted me with the reality that the next stage of this debilitating disease was almost upon us. This last visit was another confrontation for me, at least. Bev handled the whole deal better than I. You will have deduced by now that my dear wife is virtually no longer able to walk under her own power.
On the positive side, we are enormously grateful for the provision of practical aids that help Bev with issues related to her mobility. The Motor Neurone Disease Association has provided Bev with a lightweight wheelchair which is more manoeuvrable than her current 'walker'. We will have a further visit today or tomorrow from the Association when they deliver a battery-powered motor "scooter" so that Bev can move freely around the Village where we live.
Over this last weekend we have used the new chair at the shopping mall. I have to say that I never envisaged that it would be me pushing her in a wheel chair. Interestingly enough, we had quite a bit of fun in our endeavours trying not to do damage to fellow shoppers and advertising fixtures.
BEV: This last week has been an amazing week of affirmation for both of us. From so many sources we have had phone calls, emails and cards in which people have affirmed our journey and the blessings that are flowing to them as they follow our journey on Barnabas.
I think that I am becoming more relaxed with the reality of people wanting to serve us and I have begun to welcome the many expressions of that ministry to us. Why is it that we want to serve others but have so much trouble in letting others serve us? I think of the Apostle Peter when Jesus was washing the feet of the disciples and how Peter insisted that, if anyone was going to wash feet, he would wash the feet of Jesus, not the other way around. Jesus rebuked Peter for his attitude and made it pretty clear that Peter needed to humble himself and receive the ministry that Jesus wanted to administer.
