  • The Paradox of Change (3)

    16 March, 2014

This morning I'm wondering why the subject of "change" seems to be occupying my attention over recent days. I guess Bev and I are in the midst of significant change at the moment as so much in our life together is changing rather dramatically as we contend with Motor Neurone Disease. Maybe no other reason is needed! Having said that, I'm also thinking about those leaders and churches that are seeking to come to terms with the dynamics of change within their local church.

Among the many wonderful memories that I carry into retirement after being a Pastor for 40 years, there are some painful ones as well. Interestingly, most of them have to do with people's reactions to changes that I either initiated or supported.

Here are three principles that ought to be noted by those who want to initiate change.

There is no growth without change.

There is no change without loss.

There is no loss without pain.

The Pastor/Church Leader who is initiating change but doesn't realize that they will have to do some grief counseling in that process, doesn't understand the impact of change and they are, therefore, setting the Church up for unnecessary pain.
