THE CONVERSATION THAT NEVER TOOK PLACE
After breakfast Simon Peter asked Jesus, “Jesus, son of Joseph, do you love me?”
“Yes, Simon” Jesus replied, “you know I love you.”
“Then _________________________________________________” Peter told him.
Simon Peter repeated the question: “Jesus, son of Joseph, do you love me?”
“Yes, Simon,” Jesus said, “you know I love you.”
“Then ______________________________________________________” Peter said.
A third time he asked him, “Jesus, son of Joseph, do you love me?” Jesus was grieved that Simon asked the question a third time.
He said, “Simon, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Simon then said to Jesus,
“Then_______________________________________________________________
The above conversation never took place. But a conversation remarkably like it certainly did. So, if it did have a familiar ring about it, here is possibly the reason why you somehow think you have heard it before
15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.
16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.
17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. John 21:15-17 (NLT)Now, here is the challenge. You are to fill in the three blank lines in the conversation that never took place. What would you require of Jesus if you knew that He really loved you?
Jesus required something of Peter when he professed his love for the Lord – three times, in fact.
