  • Today's "Moment With Mark" (2) - A Strange Messenger

    14 November, 2012

And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. (Mark 1/4-6)

I wonder how readily John found acceptance with the people, given that his fashion sense and dietary habits were somewhat "unconventional"!!  I recall one occasion when I was very critical of a certain preacher because of the way he conducted himself and presented the Word of God. God's rebuke to me sounded like this, "You are not called to critique this messenger. You are to discern if what he is teaching is truth. The people I use to declare my Word is not the issue. Your criticism exposes something of the pride in your heart. That's the issue you need to address.".

I wonder how many people in John's day missed out because they rejected the fashion sense and dietary practices of the messenger and, in doing so, they dismissed the message?  You will see this principle clearly operational in Luke 7/21-35. The majority of the Pharisees made rejection an art form!

Is God having trouble getting through to you because you resent or reject the "package" in which the message comes (be that a person, a music style or a preaching style) and, therefore, you reject the message?
