When he returned to them the third time, he said, "Still sleeping? Still resting? Enough! The time has come. I, the Son of Man, am betrayed into the hands of sinners. Up, let's be going. See, my betrayer is here!" (Mark 14:41-42 NLT)
"Betrayed". Just the word itself conveys the sense of treachery. Trust has been extended from one person to another and that trust has then been abused to a degree unimaginable. I don't know which is worse; (1) to have been betrayed by a person or persons largely unknown to you or (2) to be betrayed by a person or persons known to you fairly well or (3) to be betrayed by someone who is not only known to you but is someone you love and trust. The husband who betrays his wife's trust in him.
That good friend who you really believed would keep the confidence she promised when you shared that most private of matters with her. And so the examples multiply.
Betrayal of any kind always leaves a bad taste in one's mouth but to be betrayed by a trusted colleague, a brother or sister in Christ with whom you have shared the highs and lows of your spiritual journey, one in whom you have invested 3 years of your life only to have him come as an enemy. Perhaps worst of all is that he or she pretends still to be your brother rather than declare his/her real identity and agenda.
"My betrayer is at hand". What will Jesus do? What will He say? In a few moments He and Judas will be face to face.
Now the scene changes. Suddenly, you are back in 2013, in real time, at a gathering of old friends and colleagues. In fact, it was one of these so-called 'colleagues' who betrayed your trust. Then your heart skips a beat (at least one!!) Guess who just walked in through the door? "Your betrayer is at hand".
