  • Today's "Moment with Mark" (110)

    15 March, 2013

Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, "Well, aren't you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?" Jesus made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the blessed God?" Jesus said, "I am......"   (Mark 14:60-62  NLT)

The High Priest couldn't believe his ears!!  What he thought was a carefully constructed strategy to ambush Jesus verbally and thus discredit His ministry was all but exposed for everyone to see. Even Pilate knew it was out of envy that the Jewish leaders had engineered the arrest of Jesus and brought Him to this sham of a trial.

So here is the last desperate lunge before he would have to release this Galilean upstart. He directly asks Jesus  about his identity. The response of Jesus  to this interrogator is to claim to be  the Messiah.  All Jesus had to do to break this so-called trial wide open was to remain silent. He chose to move the events along and unequivocally declared His Messiahship.  I believe what Jesus had just said is yet another example of his total authority in this situation. He is not a VICTIM! He is not a helpless martyr who is powerless to resist the actions and choices of others. I submit that Jesus, in fact, was in charge of each unfolding step from the time He set His face steadfastly towards Jerusalem (Luke 9/51). Each stage of this cosmic drama was triggered by His initiative.

We need to take heart from the fact that we belong to a Lord and Master to whom all authority in heaven and on earth has been given.
