  • Today's "Moment with Mark" (112)

    17 March, 2013

    Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and hit his face with their fists. "Who hit you that time, you prophet?" they jeered. And even the guards were hitting him as they led him away. (Mark 14:65)

    For those of us who live in a world where TV and movies have become so technologically sophisticated with mind-numbing special effects etc., we have become so familiar with scenes like this one recorded by Mark.

    Think about it for a moment. ".....and they hit His face with their fists". Did anything at all register in your mind or heart when you read that in the text above?  Or did you just skip over it like I did initially? They blindfolded Him! Put yourself in that scene. You can't see what they are doing. Why are they laughing like that? What is going to happen next? Whack!! You hear the cracking of teeth and the blood filling your mouth. Your blood. Again "Whack". This time your lip is split open as well as your eye.

    This is just the beginning of their sadistic games. There is so much more to come on their way to the ultimate evil, the cross.

    Do you sometimes find yourself shaking your head as you read or hear of the kind of atrocities that one human being can inflict upon another? Whether it be genocide on an international scale, a massacre at a State University or a domestic homicide involving horrific scenes of brutality, we ask the question, "How can anyone do something as brutal as that to another human being?"

    Now we are seeing the true nature of sin. This is what Jesus came to expose, challenge and change. As brutal as was the treatment He received at the hands of sinners, we will miss the heart of His coming if we focus solely upon the physical torture of the whip, the fists, the thorns and the cross. There is a much deeper level to be considered; a level that is spiritual and cosmic in nature.

    Bill Gaither put it like this in one of his many songs:

    There's a line that's been drawn through the ages,

    On that line stands an old rugged Cross.

    On  that Cross a battle is raging for the gain of man's soul or his loss.

    On one side march the forces of evil, all the demons and devils of hell;

    On the other the angels of glory and they meet on Golgotha's hill.
