The next morning as they passed by the fig tree he had cursed, the disciples noticed it was withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered what Jesus had said to the tree on the previous day and exclaimed, "Look, Teacher! The fig tree you cursed has withered!" Then Jesus said to the disciples, "Have faith in God.( Mark 11:20-22)
So, I was right when I said a couple of days ago that the cursing of the fig tree was a living parable; Jesus was using both verbal and visual means to get His truth across. Mind you, I could understand if the disciples felt Jesus was simply having a non-too-positive day! First, He curses the fig tree late in the afternoon. Maybe some of the disciples hoped He would wake in a better mood the next morning. Allowances had to be made for this One who had been teaching about the Cross.
Wrong!!
The next morning Jesus headed straight to the Temple with a specific agenda in mind - and it wasn't to commend the priests on a job well done! A few of the disciples (maybe?) hoped He would get over this negative attitude.
"Gentle Jesus, meek and mild....." If He is meek and mild, then we can be assured that we didn't stumble upon that conviction from anything in this section of Mark's gospel. Again, perhaps, we may need to review and revise our image of Jesus so that it accords with the facts rather than our perception of reality.
