  • Today's "Moment with Mark" (78)

    7 February, 2013

When will all this take place? And will there be any sign ahead of time to show us when all this will be fulfilled?" (Mark 13:4 NLT)

There are few things that capture our attention like knowing the future. Fortune tellers, tarot card readers are in great demand because of this powerful desire and need to know the "what", "when" and "how" of the unknown future. This fascination is not the sole province of many religious groups. Yet, from Day 1 it would seem, there have been countless claims and counter-claims about times and dates regarding the "end times". Thus far all have proven to be wrong.

It seems that we easily become focused on what we do not and what we cannot control. So it comes as no surprise that the disciples want to know more specific details about the destruction of Jerusalem.

I think it is significant that Jesus first comment in response to their question is, "Don't let anyone mislead you". Our desire to know about the future can make us easy prey for the charlatans  who exploit that desire to their own selfish ends. Jesus will proceed to answer their question as much as He can.

We do well to weigh very carefully the claims that people make so far as what they believe about the future. That kind of scrutiny ought to reach fever pitch if their claims require you to pay money or to commit your time and abilities to their cause or organization or to surrender your loyalty to them instead of being true to your family commitments.

Jesus indicated that there will be many who come claiming to either be the Messiah or to represent him. "Don't let anyone mislead you".
