  • A Thought For Today

    21 September, 2014

I woke about 5.15am and I just couldn’t get back to sleep. My interest in things to do with aviation surfaced and I took myself to the computer. The overnight curfew at our International Airport ends at 6.00am and many of the long overnight flights line up to land as soon as they can.

My computer is set-up so that I can listen in to the Air Traffic Controllers do their thing as they carefully direct each aircraft into a landing pattern that is safe for all concerned. Add to that my I-Pad which has a program that shows me where each aircraft is located in real time and I was soon forgetting about the early hour.

This thought then came to mind. “What would happen if each pilot decided that they didn’t like the course, flight levels or speed that was assigned to them and they chose their own?” It beggars all description. In fact, what I heard that morning (and at other times) was each captain repeating the directions given and, in doing so, they were committing themselves to comply with those directions.

What might happen in our families, our communities and even nation if we refused to abide by the ATC instructions – the directions that come from our ‘Air Traffic Controller’ – God Himself? There are far too many instances where people have “crash, burn, die” because those directives (given to us for our safety and well-being) have been ignored.
