My darling,
Your inspirational example continues to be talked about in grateful terms by many, many people. As you would expect, I talk a lot about your example and the impact it had on me. I know something of what you suffered but I was the one who asked the question, “Why? Why this kind of cruel death?”
I can now see (poorly, I think,) something of the reason behind my questioning anger. I don’t know whether this is true or not but it seems that the greater the suffering, the greater the inspirational impact in the lives of those who had the opportunity of witnessing something of your attitude.
Of course, I’m not saying that we should have found more ways to maximize your suffering so that your example would evoke greater inspiration. What I mean to say is that you chose the attitude that you wanted. You couldn’t choose your circumstances but you could choose your attitude towards those circumstances.
Now, that’s inspirational!!
I recall reading in your “Book of Days” the statement “The secret is Christ in me, not me in another set of circumstances”. So you made a choice the impact of which is still felt by all those who watched the outcome of that choice.
Last night I and L took me out for dinner. It was so good to catch up with them again. That time with them was yet another occasion in which the people I was with acknowledged how much your example and attitude inspired and challenged them.
I’m looking very forward to my trip with Pete to Uluru next weekend. They reckon it’s a huge rock but I met a guy last week who said he first saw it when it was only a stone! (Awkward attempt at humour!) You remember the uniqueness of my sense of humour and my somewhat limited repertoire of jokes??
I want to get this into the mail so I will conclude here and you can be sure that I will write again soon
