  • Today's "Moment with Mark" (106)

    11 March, 2013

"Am I some dangerous criminal, that you come armed with swords and clubs to arrest me?  Why didn't you arrest me in the Temple? I was there teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me." ( Mark 14:48-49)

Jesus asked a lot of questions in the course of His ministry. Some genuinely sought information (e.g. "What is your name?") Some were gracious and gentle. Some were confrontational even blunt. Still others were designed to cause one to pause and re-evaluate life's direction and values. Then there were those questions that were asked in order to expose the motives behind particular actions and agendas.

The question Jesus asked in this situation was designed to do just that.   "Am I some dangerous criminal? Swords and clubs? What's with the armoury? Wouldn't it have been easier to arrest me at the Temple, I'm there every day, you know?"  If any of these midnight visitors had half a brain, they would have asked themselves this very question. However, it appears that they avoided the question and went on with their clandestine raid.

They may not have known the motives behind their employers' orders but Jesus knew exactly why they had come. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.

The events were a fulfilment of prophesy. Jesus walked through these events absolutely gripped by the realisation that this was a fulfilment. That's why He challenges Pilate shortly. That's why He confronts the High Priest and all those leaders in the Jewish Council. He knows that He is NOT a victim as is the case with others - like the two thieves who will crucified with Him in a few hours.

What strength such knowledge imparted! We are meant to walk in that knowledge and assurance. We are part of God's Master Plan. May this day (and every day hereafter) be filled with the sense that the events in my life are being utilized to fulfil what God is doing in me and through me.
