  • Today's "Moment With Mark" (13) - Authority

    25 November, 2012

They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.  The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.  (Mark 1:21-23)

Authority has nothing to do with power, manipulation and control. Many teachers of the Law didn't understand that reality. Sadly, many of their counterparts today don't understand it either. There are those who believe that authority comes with position or status (e.g. some clergy - "I am the Pastor and you will recognise my authority". (Man, are you in for a shock!")

True authority that people recognise and respect comes from character.

True authority has to be earned. The fact is that authority cannot be exercised until it is given by the people to their leader. It comes as a result of integrity, humility, consistency and authenticity. When people see these qualities in the life of another, they will give to that man or woman the authority that other leaders only dream about.

That's the kind of authority that marked the life of Jesus.
