• Today's "Moment With Mark" (17) - Peter's Wife

  As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.  Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her.  So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. (Mark 1:29-31)

  
  Simon (or Peter as we better know him) had a mother-in-law? How about that!  [No, I'm not going to get into those mother-in-law jokes]. I guess the presence of a mother-in-law pre-supposes that Peter had a wife. If not at the time of this event, then sometime in the past. I wonder if she was still alive?  Maybe Peter was a widower?
   

  If Peter's wife was still alive, I wonder how she felt about Peter becoming a disciple of Jesus - a trainee evangelist?!  I wonder if they ever had that kind of conversation that begins with, "I married a fisherman, not a minister!"

  
  Then again, I wonder if she was anything like her mother appears to be? As soon as she could, Peter's mum-in-law was on her feet serving those who came to her house despite the fact that she had earlier been sidelined with a fever.

  
  I wonder if those of us who are privileged to have a wife or husband who is a believer, a fellow disciple and a strong supporter of our service for Jesus have expressed our gratitude to them and to the Lord for such an amazing gift?
