Today's "Moment With Mark" (3) - Symbol or Reality
15 November, 2012
And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1/7,8
John knew his place in relation to Jesus; he was not worthy to fulfill the role of a slave in comparison with Jesus. (That's the reference to the undoing of the thongs on the sandals). This Jesus was more powerful than John in every way..John said he could do no more than baptise people with water - the symbol. He said that Jesus' ministry would see people baptised with the Holy Spirit - the reality.
Over the years there has been a lot of theological debate about the "baptism in the Holy Spirit". Some have claimed that it is an experience subsequent to conversion. Others claim that it can be nothing other than conversion. The real issue here is whether or not you and I are walking in the reality or the symbol.
What's the point in being theologically right if we are not walking in the reality of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit?
