Today's "Moment with Mark" (49) - God's Timing
9 January, 2013
During the night, the disciples were in their boat out in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land. He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. (Mark 6:47-48 NLT)
There's more than one kind of storm in our natural world and there's more than one kind of storm in the spiritual world. The natural world often reflects the spiritual world. Back in chapter4, Mark related the details of a storm that was (I think) demonic in nature. It appeared quickly, savagely and with such fury that even the seasoned sailors within the discipleship group were terrified by the experience. Some opposition to our Christian witness will be like that storm.
But not all opposition (storms) is of that kind. In this situation we consider today there is no suggestion that the storm was life-threatening. ".....they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. This storm was just plain hard work, struggling against the wind and waves which were 'going the other way!
In some ways, this persistent, 'not-giving-up' kind of resistance towards us is designed to wear us down, grinding us into a state of resignation where we pull down the sails and adopt an attitude 'if you can't beat 'em, join them".
Of course, this whole scenario changed when Jesus came aboard, didn't it? But it took Him awhile to come to them. Why the delay until 3.ooam? What we learn from this experience is that storms will come but Jesus is aware of our plight. However, the timing of His intervention will be of His choosing.Remember the story of the raising of Lazarus (John 11)? There was a 2 day delay during which Lazarus died. Human longing pleaded for a healing. God's agenda was for a resurrection.
