Today's "Moment With Mark" (5) - Temptation
17 November, 2012
At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan.(Mark 1/12,13)
This scenario really rattles my theological cage! "Sent by the Spirit" to be "tempted by Satan"!How can those two dynamics be found together anywhere in the Bible, let alone in the same verse?! Surely this is a contradiction of mammoth proportions. Jesus has just been baptised. He has been affirmed in the love and pleasure of His Father. Now this?
I used to think that the closer we were to God the less likely we are to be tempted. Apparently not!
In fact, the opposite is true. It is the effective disciple who attracts the attention of Satan. Jesus is about to commence His public ministry. The Kingdom of God is about to invade the Kingdom of Darkness with devastating results for the dark kingdom.
So I ought not to think that when I'm close to the Lord, Satan is necessarily far away. It seems that I can expect his attention. That's when "Be alert" is good advice!
