Today's "Moment with Mark" (51)
11 January, 2013
For you ignore God's specific laws and substitute your own traditions." Mark 7:8 NLT
Yesterday I noted that there is a world of difference between religion and true faith. One of the many differences is this: religion is entirely concerned with things external while true faith is focused on things internal.
Religion requires us to conform to a whole range of rules and regulations (what we may wear, what we may do, where we may go, who we may see etc.) These rules are to be obeyed so that we may appear to be "good" and religious people. The heart condition is unimportant. It's what appears to be that is primary concern.
True faith, on the other hand, is entirely focused on the condition of the heart. In other words, if the heart is right, rules and regulations don't count for very much. Those whose lives are being transformed inwardly by grace, will live according to the love relationship as it impacts their lives, not because there's a law that says you will do such-and -such but because there's love and grace that I want to honour because of the greatness of God's love.
How about you and me? Are we simply conforming to a code of behaviour (external conformity) OR are we living out of a renewed heart (Internal transformation)?
