Today's "Moment With Mark" (8) - The Kingdom
20 November, 2012
After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" (Mark 1:14-15)
I can't leave this passage without one further observation. Sometimes I think that we talk too much about "the Church" and not enough about "the Kingdom". I did some elementary research awhile back and discovered that "kingdom" is mentioned 3 times more often than "Church".
Too often our talk about "the Church" centres around ideas of form, structure, organization, meetings etc. These things are not wrong or evil. But if we focus on "the Kingdom" we will more readily talk about mission, warfare, evangelism and justice etc.
Jesus began His ministry with a clear focus on the Kingdom of God. Do I always talk about the Church? Does the concept of the Kingdom of God find a central place in my understanding and conversation?
