A few weeks ago I was interviewed on radio and the focus of the interview was our book, “Our Journey Through the Valley”. Apparently it had fallen into the hands of the manager who was moved significantly and ask if I would be prepared to be interviewed “on air”.
For those who are unfamiliar with the book in question, it covers the last two years of Bev’s earthly life. She died of Motor Neurone Disease in April, 2015.
It soon became evident that the subject of death and dying raised a lot of issues for our manager. His questions were emotionally empowered. They were for me, too!! The fact that I, a Pastor, would admit to questioning aspects faith that have preached over many years somehow gave him permission to admit the same reaction.
One of his questions to me was “Do you know where Bev is now and what she is doing?” With a glint in my eye I said, “I know what she is not doing! She’s not singing “Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine!” [As teenagers, we sang that so many times that we tired of it. With the same glint in her eye she would say, “If we are going to spend eternity in heaven singing that song, then I’m not going!!”
Then these words came unbidden from my heart “She is in the presence of her Lord and she is lost in wonder, love and praise!!”
It was one of those all-too-rare occasions when the words tumble out before my mind could engage. I believe that God’s Spirit was answering that question before we had a chance to speculate.
