  • Our Journey Through The Valley (76)

    6 March, 2014

Our journey took on a new dimension yesterday. Bev was admitted to hospital for a period of respite care over the next two weeks. The general opinion seems to be that we both need a time of renewal and refreshment. These last couple of months have been demanding on both of us as the disease has subtly but unmistakeably robbed Bev of virtually all her ability to stand, to walk, to turn, to place one foot after the other. This means, of course, she now spends almost all her time in a wheel-chair (apart from the few hours each night in bed.

As I left Bev at the hospital yesterday afternoon, it hit me hard that this would be the first time we had been separated. I walked back into an empty house. Yes, a new dimension had entered our lives.

The hospital where Bev will be over these next 2 weeks specialises in the treatment of Motor Neurone Disease. Bev will be attended to by an experienced staff and she will learn some of the skills that will make life a little easier - for a time anyway. The care that there folk give is a lovely gift at a difficult time.

As is typical of my dear wife, she sees these 2 weeks as an opportunity for my own renewal. She is willing to accommodate the unsettledness of a changed environment and routine if it means that I get some time off from looking after her. Those of you who pray for us might consider praying that this opportunity for some "time out" will prove to be a time of "green grass and still waters" that restores our souls (as per Psalm 23)
